The following planned legal changes are envisaged for 2009:
| February | Employment Rights (increase of limits) order 2008 – see article in HR news above. |
| ‘Spring’ | points-based immigration extends to tier 4 (students). |
| April | Statutory leave entitlement increased from 4.8 week to 5.6 weeks. |
| Statutory maternity, paternity and adoption pay increased. | |
| Employment Act 2008 – repeal of statutory dismissal, grievance and disciplinary procedure; extended right to request flexible working. | |
| August | Minimum weekly earnings for apprentices increased. |
| October | National Minimum Wage likely to rise. |
| And… | Children, Skills and Learning Bill expected to reform education, training and apprenticeships. |
| Equality Bill planned to consolidate (and in some cases extend) existing discrimination law. | |
| Welfare Reform Bill intended to improve support for moving people from welfare to work and provide greater support for disabled people. |
