Workplace deaths

Hard on the heels of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act (see HR News February and March) new figures from the Health and Safety Executive demonstrate the scale of the potential liabilities faced by employers.

According to the HSE 241 employees were killed in workplace incidents in 2006 – 2007 and some 90 members of the public were also killed, equating to 0.8 fatal workplace injuries for every 100,000 workers. 46% of these deaths were accounted for by the Agriculture and Construction industries and falling from heights was the most common single cause, responsible for 19% of workplace deaths.
