Jobless falls, employment increases, vacancies rise and how not to get a job

Despite the impression of economic gloom conveyed through the media, the number of people in employment has reached a record 29.5 million. At the same time a survey by a national charity has highlighted how to perform at interview in order to make sure that the job offer goes to someone else.

The Office for National Statistics have reported the largest annual increase in employment since 1997 with 74.9% of people of working age in employment, a record low level of redundancies and a 90,000 decrease in unemployment from a year ago. The main beneficiaries in the job market are older workers with 7.89 million people over 50 continuing to work.

Meanwhile, National Children’s Homes have reported a list of top traits to annoy potential employers at interview. In their survey, 78% of employers said that they wouldn’t offer a position to a candidate who swore in an interview, 76% would turn a candidate down who answered a mobile phone during the process, 50% would not offer a role to a candidate who was scruffily dressed and 49% would not give a job to a candidate who arrived more than 10 minutes late.
