Working time directive opt out extended

The UK Government has won a vote of EU member states keeping the current  exemption allowing UK employees to work longer than 48 hours per week, ‘though there is a commitment to future review.

According to the TUC, around 3.3 million UK workers regularly work more than 48 hours per week and the move is seen as being positive for UK jobs. Some recent case law (see Havering PCT v Bidwell later in this month’s ‘People Matters’) demonstrates the care that employers need to take over the provision.
