Employment Review magazine reports that just 24% of businesses now offer Company cars – a fall from 55% last year.
The trend line has been downward since 1999 but has gathered pace this year. The study of 277 businesses showed that mileage allowance is the most popular alternative being paid to all staff by 74% of the sample.
In an unrelated survey, the RAC produced data showing that Company car drivers have more accidents, take less care of their vehicles, fail to carry out basic checks and even fill up with the wrong fuel. Their report goes on to suggest that 40,000 Company car breakdowns attended by them every year are avoidable and that fleet drivers were twice as likely to be involved in an accident as the average motorist.
