Whistle while you work

Contestants in the French reality TV show ‘Temptation Island’ have been awarded around €22,000 each as a court ruled that they have the same entitlements to pay and benefits as employees.

In a landmark ruling a French court has decided that the programme, in which couples are separated on a tropical island while single people try to seduce them, “constitutes a job and therefore justifies an employment contract”. Programme makers are understandably concerned at the decision which means that participants in similar shows, such as the French version of Big Brother, are likely to be entitled to a 35 hour week, holiday pay, notice of termination and overtime payments.
