The office for National Statistics published the latest unemployment figures last week, revealing 2.38m jobless, an increase of 7.6% and the highest total for ten years. Figures from elsewhere demonstrate that organisations are still implementing strategies to manage their staff costs.
Although the unemployment figures are bound to be a lagging indicator of the state of the economy, the CIPD revealed that enquiries to their legal helpline continue to show a high rate of redundancy activity among it’s members.
Figures from the CBI, meanwhile, show that 45% of employers have increased flexible working among staff in response to the recession. British Airways revealed that 800 of it’s employees had volunteered to work for nothing for up to a month, 4,000 workers were taking unpaid leave and 1,400 had opted for part time working through the downturn. KPMG’s request for a four day week from it’s staff met with an 86% take-up and the firm revealed this week that up to 50 other employers made contact with them to ask how they could go about implementing similar measures.
