The Guardian has reported that the Association of Chief Police Officers could save £40-£50m annually by forcing recruits to pay for their own training.
Of the various schemes reviewed, there is an apparent preference for one proposed by Scotland Yard where new recruits are required to work for a year as unpaid Special Constables with no guarantee of a paid job at the end of it. Arguments in favour of the proposal include parity with other occupations such as Nurses, where training periods are unpaid, and a perceived greater motivation in recruits who are required to make sacrifices to join the service.
An unrelated survey by training provider Cegos found that 76% of European workers are prepared to invest their own time and 53% some of their own money in training in expectation of greater salaries and promotion prospects.
