Figures from the CIPD show the average costs of Employment Tribunals are running at about £20,000 per business per annum.

Equality Bill a ‘bureaucratic nightmare’ warns CBI
Harriet Harman laid the Equality White Paper before Parliament at the end of June
aiming to consolidate the existing equality provisions from other Acts (estimated at
more than 100 independent provisions) and ‘streamline and strengthen the law’ by introducing ‘positive action to address inequality in the workplace’.

6m people have sued their employers over illness at work in the last year
The Government has agreed to work with the EU to produce the much discussed Agency Workers Directive to give greater rights to agency workers with some expecting the measures to be implemented as early as next April.

Increase to National Minimum Wage and fuel rates
1 October will see the National Minimum Wage increased to £3.53, £4.77 and £5.73 for workers aged 16 – 17, 18 – 21 and 22 and over respectively. Fuel rates for Company car users have also gone up but not the rates for those who use their own vehicles for work.

When they can’t see the wood for the red tape
In a move which has even the CEO of the Health and Safety Executive scratching his head, BSI British Standards is drafting guidelines proposing that any owner of trees, including businesses with trees on their premises, are made accountable for bi-annual inspections to assess the risk that they pose to members of the public through ‘branch shedding’ and ‘whole tree failure’ – heavy bits falling off them, we guess.
