Jobless rise, redundancies still high and flexibility continues
The office for National Statistics published the latest unemployment figures last week, revealing 2.38m jobless, an increase of 7.6% and the highest total for ten years. Figures from elsewhere demonstrate that organisations are still implementing strategies to manage their staff costs.

Private sector pensions withdraw throws public sector costs into the light
The Trades Union Unite announced a ballot of members at Barclays over the company’s proposal to close their final salary pension scheme. Barclays is going further than most to deal with their estimated £2.2 billion deficit but BP and Morrisons have also recently announced changes to their own defined benefit schemes in the face of escalating employer costs.

13.5m working days lost through stress
Research from Warwickshire University shows that stress related absence continues to rise, with more than 13.5 million absence days blamed on stress over the last year.
