I'm lost for words..

..so I’ll borrow some others.

I have empathy and love, but I know they’re not sufficient and I have no answers.

I read and hear about a ‘failure of leadership’ but I see the consequences of leadership. This isn’t an accident or a failure; it’s the outcome of deliberate acts and omissions.

I also know my own house is made of glass. Inequality and systemic unfairness stalk my streets, too. Russia, Brazil, the US and the UK share at least two things – world’s worst anti-Covid performance and illiberal, populist leadership.

Evolutionary theory says that things change in quantum leaps and perhaps this is that time. WB Yates:

 ‘Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.’

I don’t think we have Yate’s second coming on the way, but I do think there is a moment to be seized. F Scott Fitzgerald:

'The test of a first-rate intelligence, is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function. One should, for example, be able to see that things are hopeless and yet be determined to make them otherwise.'

Let's be determined to make things otherwise.
